Our Inspiration

The Zephaniah Owidi Odongo (ZOO) Memorial Foundation is inspired by the life of The Late Zephaniah Owidi Odongo who: 

  • Grew up in extreme poverty in rural Kenya
  • Through education, dedication and the good will of others supporting his determination, overcame serious adversity, excelled in his scholarship
  • Became a Distinguished Electrical Engineer who contributed significantly to the Kenyan telecom industry and performed activities supported by this organisation
  • Believed and demonstrated that education really is the key out of poverty, and that technology bridges the world

The Zephaniah Owidi Odongo (ZOO) Memorial Foundation is a non profit organisation providing access to information communication technology in rural and underserved areas in Kenya.
The Foundation is a progressive organisation whose goal is to to improve social welfare and sustainable economic development.

The Zephaniah Owidi Odongo (ZOO) Memorial Foundation was established in September 2008 with three main objectives: 

  • Work to close the digital divide in Kenya
  • Collect, refurbish and donate computers to underserved areas in Kenya; rural schools, youth organisations and community facilities
  • Enable access to information for learning, communication and IT skill-set development

Mission

Enable access to ICT and scholarship through the donation of computers, provision of internet services and facilitation of computer literacy training to schools, community oranisations and youth groups in Kenya.

What We Do
What We Do

Set Up ICT Centres

Beneficiaries of The ZOO Memorial Foundation have fully functional ICT centres with donated computers and internet connection.

Training

The ZOO Memorial Foundation provides and facilitates computer literacy training to its beneficiary centre trainers and members of the community.

Creating Awareness

Societies around beneficiary centres will be encouraged to take part in ICT activities such as using message boards, chat rooms and email.

Advocacy

Sensitising local companies and organisations on the importance and participation in digital revolution in Kenya.

A number of converging trends make The ZOO Memorial Foundation Rural ICT Project relevant in ICT facilitation and accessibility especially in rural Kenya

  • Increased use of ICT for both economic and social development
  • Growth of mobile telephony and mobile service providers

  • Limited or no ICT access to majority of rural Kenya

The Foundation will build a strong community of people who have similar interests. This will allow for the exchange of information for development.
